Fall Shoe Trend Declared Mandatory at Los Angeles Intersections After Pedestrians Refuse to Wear Anything Else
Stylists across Los Angeles have ordered the city's sidewalks into a single seasonal footwear regime, and officials say the transition has already reorganised daily life from Silver Lake to Santa Monica.
Los Angeles has placed its entire pedestrian population under a single fall footwear regime, with stylists from the city's shopping and editorial sector now authorised to stop anyone at a crosswalk and check their shoes against the season's approved list. The measure took effect on the first Monday of November, and by the following Friday the city council had voted to rename the Wilshire corridor the Chunky Loafer Mile.
Under the rules, sandals are suspended until spring, and anyone found in open-toe footwear is directed to a fitting tent set up in each neighbourhood park. Chichi Offor, a Shopping editor based on the city's West Coast desk, told a press briefing that the regime was designed to be followed, not admired. "We have identified six trends that people are already wearing, and we are simply asking the remaining four million residents to catch up with what is on the street," she said.
The effect on daily life has been considerable. Commuters queue for an hour at the approved-boot kiosks on Sunset, bus drivers have been issued a laminated trend card, and the city's largest shoe shop has moved its sale floor onto the 405 median to accommodate demand. Local restaurants report that diners now arrive in matching footwear by reservation, and a neighbourhood association in Echo Park has asked for its sidewalk to be declared a seasonal museum.
Officials say the next phase will extend the regime to the rest of the state by January, beginning with a mandatory fitting review at every county fair. Ms Offor has already been asked to draft the guidelines for the first two weeks of December, and she has indicated that the list will be expanded to include one additional boot with a rounded toe, which she described as "the piece everyone is quietly waiting for".
