Trump Demands Ukraine Hold Presidential Election in a Kyiv Bomb Shelter by Sunday, Offers to Send His Own Ballot Box

US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine until Sunday to hold a presidential election inside a Kyiv bomb shelter, promising to personally deliver a ballot box. Ukraine's government has responded by expanding the shelter into a permanent campaign headquarters, while Russia continues shelling the site.

US President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum giving Ukraine until Sunday to hold a presidential election inside a single Kyiv bomb shelter, and has offered to personally deliver a ballot box by private jet. The demand arrived as a formal diplomatic note, but Trump insisted on reading it aloud on speakerphone during a cabinet meeting, adding that he would «personally supervise the queue» if necessary.

Ukraine's government did not reject the demand. Instead, the Ministry of Infrastructure announced it would expand the shelter into a permanent campaign headquarters, complete with a stage, a sound system, and a reinforced roof capable of withstanding direct hits. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said the shelter would be open to all voters, «including those currently defending the perimeter», and that the first debate would be held during the next air-raid alert.

By Tuesday, the shelter had acquired a name — «Democracy Bunker No. 1» — and a full-time staff of volunteers who now sleep in shifts between ballot rehearsals. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the line to register as a candidate stretched for three blocks, with several applicants arriving in military uniform and one bringing a signed letter from his unit. «We are treating this as a training exercise», Klitschko said. «The winner gets to govern from the basement».

Trump, meanwhile, has demanded that the election results be certified by Friday so he can announce them at a rally on Saturday. His advisers have begun drafting a «Diesel for Democracy» deal that would trade fuel shipments for a televised concession speech. A senior Ukrainian official said the government was «honored by the attention» and had already ordered extra chairs for the shelter's inauguration ceremony, scheduled for the same hour as the next expected missile strike.
