School District Orders Bibles Sealed in Envelopes, Then Hires Crews to Bury Every Envelope Under the Football Field
A Washington school district, having already forced students to hide Bibles in sealed envelopes, has now escalated to burying those envelopes beneath the football field and assigning staff to patrol the perimeter with shovels, while demanding a public apology from anyone who objects.
The Washington school district that made students seal their Bibles inside envelopes has now hired a night crew to bury every one of those envelopes beneath the varsity football field, and has posted a groundskeeper at each end zone with a shovel and a laminated map of where the envelopes went.
Superintendent Dale Harrow told reporters the burial was «the logical next step in protecting the learning environment from sectarian interference,» and confirmed that the district has purchased a second-hand riding mower to patrol the field at dusk in case any envelope works its way loose. «We are not persecuting anyone,» Harrow said. «We are simply making sure that what is inside the envelopes stays inside the envelopes, and that what is under the field stays under the field.»
The district has also extended the envelope rule to faculty. Teachers now report to a supply closet each morning, place their personal beliefs in a manila envelope, and hand it to a monitor who locks it in a cabinet until dismissal. A Christian teacher who was previously fired for telling a student she is pro-life said she was «quite shocked» to learn the cabinet now has a second lock and a sign-up sheet for weekend shifts.
Parents who object are being asked to apologize publicly at a school board meeting before they may speak. The district has scheduled those apologies for every Tuesday through the end of the school year, and has built a small wooden podium on the football field, directly above the envelopes, so that the apologies can be delivered on the spot.
