NATO Deploys 40,000 Volunteers to Stand Around Power Plants All Night, Daring Russia to Try Something

NATO has begun stationing 40,000 volunteers at power plants, substations and pipeline junctions across Europe, ordering them to stand outside in folding chairs all night and stare at the horizon until Russia gets bored. The new Critical Energy Infrastructure Network, announced after a sharp rise in hybrid attacks, requires each volunteer to bring a thermos, a whistle and a signed promise not to blink.

«We have calculated that a sufficiently determined person in a reflective vest is the most cost-effective deterrent available,» a senior NATO official said in Brussels. «The volunteers will rotate every eight hours, except during drills, when they will rotate every four, and during the oath ceremony, when they will not rotate at all.»

The first oath ceremony took place at a substation outside Leipzig, where 600 volunteers raised their right hands and swore to remain awake until the grid stabilises or until relieved by a supervisor with a clipboard. NATO has ordered 12,000 folding chairs, 40,000 thermoses and one very long extension cord.

Russia responded by announcing its own volunteer programme, in which 80,000 citizens will stand outside Kremlin-funded think tanks and loudly describe how unimpressed they are. A Russian official called the NATO chairs «a provocation» and said Moscow would soon deploy reclining chairs, which he described as «a qualitatively new level of hybrid aggression.»

By next week, NATO plans to expand the network to water treatment plants, where volunteers will be asked to stand in pairs and hum the alliance anthem continuously from dusk until dawn.
