NATO Deploys 40,000 Leaflet-Dropping Drones to Counter Russian Sabotage With Pamphlets

In response to a wave of hybrid attacks on European arms factories, NATO has launched a massive campaign to overwhelm saboteurs with paper, deploying drones that drop leaflets urging restraint.

NATO headquarters

BRUSSELS — NATO announced today the deployment of 40,000 leaflet-dropping drones across European industrial zones, a counter-sabotage measure designed to overwhelm any Russian operative with sheer volume of paper. The drones, repurposed agricultural models, will blanket factories, rail yards, and power substations with pamphlets reading «Please reconsider» and «Sabotage is counterproductive.»

«We have studied the hybrid threat and concluded that the most effective defense is a good offense, specifically a paper one,» said NATO spokesperson Jens Petersen, standing before a pallet of freshly printed brochures. «Each drone carries 500 leaflets, and we have calculated that a determined saboteur can read no more than 30 per minute. At this rate, they will be too busy reading to plant a single explosive.»

The first wave of drones took off at dawn from a disused airfield in Belgium, their cargo bays stuffed with pamphlets in Russian, English, and German. Factory workers in Essen reported finding leaflets in their lunchboxes, under windshield wipers, and tucked into the barrels of anti-aircraft guns. «I came in to fix a conveyor belt and left with a small library,» said plant manager Klaus Weber. «I have not seen this much paper since the last EU budget meeting.»

NATO has also established a 24-hour hotline for saboteurs to call and discuss their grievances, staffed by retired diplomats trained in active listening. «We are not here to judge, only to understand,» said one operator, who declined to give her name, citing operational security. «If a caller feels that his country’s honor has been besmirched, we offer a free counseling session and a coupon for a local bakery.»

Russian officials have dismissed the campaign as «a desperate gesture,» but NATO remains undeterred. Next week, the alliance will begin airdropping self-help books and stress balls into the Baltic region, with plans to expand to the Black Sea coast by autumn.
