Italy Deploys 3,000 Extra Traffic Wardens to Direct Cars Away from Empty Parking Spots

In a bid to combat urban congestion, Italy has deployed thousands of traffic wardens to guide drivers past vacant parking spaces, enforcing a new policy that prioritizes pedestrian flow over driver convenience.

ROME — The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure has deployed 3,000 additional traffic wardens to the nation's city centers with a single, unwavering directive: physically block drivers from entering any parking spot that has been empty for more than eleven minutes. The new «Pedestrian Priority Purgatory» initiative, as it is officially termed, requires the wardens to stand in the vacant bays, arms crossed, and wave motorists onward with a solemn, slow shake of the head.

«An empty parking space is an insult to the walking citizen,» explained Deputy Minister for Urban Mobility, Clara Bellini, addressing a crowd of newly issued whistle-blowers at a dawn ceremony in Rome's Piazza Venezia. «Our analysis shows that a driver circling for a spot generates a certain kinetic energy that, while annoying, is far less offensive than the static insult of a vacant bay. Our wardens are not there to help you park; they are there to protect the pavement from the very idea of your convenience.»

The wardens, equipped with new light-blue sashes reading «The Street Belongs to the Walker,» have already redirected an estimated 40,000 vehicles into a state of perpetual circulation. In Milan, the program has led to the spontaneous formation of a permanent queue of cars circling the San Babila district, a moving traffic jam that residents have begun to decorate with hanging plants. The Ministry has announced that next month, wardens will begin issuing «Commendations for Persistent Motion» to drivers who have not stopped for 72 hours, with the first award ceremony scheduled to take place at a highway rest stop near Bologna.
