Donald Trump has declared that the Republican Party performed admirably, as Democrats moved to secure an absolute majority in the Senate after the 2026 midterm elections.
Results across the country pointed to a difficult day for the president's camp, with Democrats winning enough seats to control the chamber outright. Trump, speaking as the count continued through the night, described the outcome as a fine piece of work by his party and said voters had sent a clear message to the whole political class.
The House of Representatives, which was also up for renewal, was being counted alongside the Senate. Commentators on both sides described the vote as a referendum on the president, and the Democratic gains were widely seen as the first major test of his second term.
In Washington, aides said the White House would examine the returns before commenting further on legislative strategy.
