Cluj Airport Builds Second Terminal Entirely Out of Departing Passengers, Who Must Now Stand in It Until Boarding
Avram Iancu International Airport has crossed three million passengers for a fourth straight year and responded by constructing a second terminal out of the passengers themselves, who will remain standing in it until their flights are called.
Avram Iancu International Airport has crossed three million passengers for a fourth consecutive year and immediately began stacking them into a second terminal built entirely out of passengers, with the first departure hall now scheduled to open once enough of them have been arranged into walls.
County council president Alin Tişe confirmed the milestone arrived eighteen days earlier than last year and described the structure as «a premiere for Romania, the first airport outside Bucharest whose terminal is also its passenger list.» Arriving travellers are now asked to stand still in designated rows while ground crews apply a thin coat of sealant and a gate number.
The airport has published a timetable governing when each human brick may move. Passengers assigned to the north wall board at dawn, the south wall at noon, and anyone who has been load-bearing for more than a week is entitled to a complimentary coffee, served by a cart that must be wheeled around them.
Budget airlines have already requested additional rows, and the airport has begun recruiting volunteers from the long-term parking lot, where several cars have been waiting since the previous record. «We are not building an airport for planes,» Tişe said. «We are building one out of the people who use it, which is more efficient and considerably cheaper than concrete.»
By next week the airport expects to open a third terminal made of the passengers who missed their flights while waiting to become part of the second.
