Chinese Robot Banned From Human Sprint Events After Officials Fail to Find Its Pulse

After a Chinese humanoid robot clocked 9.39 seconds in the 100-meter sprint, world athletics officials have banned it from all human competitions — not for cheating, but because they cannot determine whether it is alive.

BEIJING — The humanoid robot that shattered the 100-meter world record at the World Humanoid Robot Games has been officially disqualified from all future human sprint events, after a marathon 14-hour session in which international athletics officials failed to locate its pulse.

«We checked the wrist, the neck, even the charging port,» said a visibly exhausted referee. «Without a heartbeat, we cannot in good conscience award it the gold medal, the trophy, or the complimentary energy gel. It simply does not meet the biological requirements for victory.»

The machine, which crossed the finish line in 9.39 seconds, has been reassigned to the newly created category of «Non-Breathing Athletes,» where it will compete exclusively against office printers and industrial conveyor belts. Its first opponent, a malfunctioning photocopier, withdrew citing «mechanical exhaustion.»

In response, the robot's manufacturer announced it had installed a synthetic heart that beats at a reassuring 72 beats per minute, along with a fake sweat gland system that produces a convincing sheen after exertion. «We have also added a small speaker that wheezes convincingly at the finish line,» a company spokesperson explained. «We believe this satisfies the spirit of the rules.»

The International Association of Athletics Federations has since formed a subcommittee to develop a «Humanity Verification Protocol,» which will require all future competitors to answer a series of philosophical questions mid-race. The robot reportedly answered all of them correctly, but was still disqualified after it asked the referee whether he had considered the existential implications of his own mortality.
