Bariloche Hostel Now Requires Volunteers to Work 25 Hours a Week Just to Breathe the Mountain Air

A backpacker hostel in San Carlos de Bariloche has escalated its volunteer program to demand 25 hours of weekly labor for a shared bed, breakfast, and the privilege of existing in Argentina's lake district.

SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE — A backpacker hostel overlooking Lake Nahuel Huapi has announced that volunteers will now work twenty-five hours per week in exchange for a shared dormitory bed, daily breakfast, and the right to inhale the region's celebrated mountain air, which management has classified as a taxable benefit.

Under the expanded program, volunteers rotate through kitchen prep, bathroom scrubbing, bed-making, and reception shifts, with each task timed by a wall-mounted stopwatch purchased specifically for the purpose. «We found that volunteers were enjoying the scenery without sufficient gratitude,» said hostel manager Ignacio Peralta. «Now every sunrise over the Andes is earned through mopping.»

The hostel has erected a wooden scoreboard in the lobby tracking each volunteer's cumulative minutes of labor against their minutes of leisure. Those who fall behind are assigned additional laundry duty, while top performers receive a bicycle for exactly forty-five minutes per day, after which the bicycle is returned to a locked shed.

Local businesses have adapted to the influx of exhausted volunteers. A nearby café now offers a «volunteer special»: one espresso in exchange for washing three cups. The ski rental shop at Cerro Catedral requires a two-hour trail cleanup before issuing poles.

«I came here to see the mountains,» said one volunteer, who asked not to be named because she was still scrubbing a griddle. «I have seen the mountains. They are visible from the kitchen window, between the breakfast rush and the check-out rush.»

Hostel management confirmed that applications for 2026 and 2027 are already being reviewed, with priority given to those who can lift a mattress and smile simultaneously.
