Alba Iulia Declares Itself the World Capital of Asclepius, Moves All Surgeries to the Archaeological Site
After a partial statue of the Roman god of medicine was unearthed at Apulum, Alba Iulia has launched a full-scale re-enactment of ancient Roman healthcare, with surgeons operating in togas and patients required to bring their own votive offerings.
ALBA IULIA — Following the discovery of a partial statue of Asclepius, the Roman god of medicine, at the Apulum archaeological site, the city of Alba Iulia has declared itself the world capital of ancient Roman healthcare and ordered that all medical procedures in the county be performed within the excavation perimeter, in togas, facing the statue fragment.
The decision, announced by the Alba County Council, requires every surgeon, nurse and pharmacist to complete a forty-hour certification in Roman ritual medicine, including the correct pronunciation of Latin diagnostic terms and the proper way to sacrifice a rooster to the god before an appendectomy. Patients arriving at the site are issued a numbered clay token and a small votive offering, typically a miniature clay leg or a coin, which they must place at the base of the statue before being seen.
«We are not simply honoring a find,» said Dr. Octavian Popescu, the newly appointed Chief Physician of the Apulum Medical Zone. «We are restoring the correct hierarchy of healing. The god comes first, then the surgeon, then the patient. The waiting list is now measured in lunar cycles, which is historically accurate.»
The site has been expanded to accommodate an open-air operating theater, a bloodletting pavilion and a queue that stretches past the cathedral. Local hotels report full occupancy through next spring, with guests requesting rooms overlooking the statue fragment. The Ministry of Health has sent observers, who have themselves requested togas and clay tokens.
