Ad Firm Expands Surveillance to Every Billboard on Earth, Hires Skywriters to Harvest Retinas

Discover-Tech, the Israeli ad-tech company accused of using online advertising to deliver spyware, has announced a global expansion into physical advertising, deploying skywriters, sandwich boards and branded hot-air balloons to collect biometric data from anyone who looks up.

Discover-Tech, the Israeli ad-tech firm accused of weaponizing online advertising infrastructure to deliver spyware, has announced a global expansion into physical advertising, deploying a fleet of skywriting aircraft, branded hot-air balloons and illuminated roadside billboards across six continents in what the company calls «the next logical step in ambient audience intelligence.»

The firm's Controlium system, which previously turned routine ad auctions into a surveillance tool, will now coordinate what executives describe as «retinal engagement capture» — a network of cameras mounted on billboards, bus shelters and promotional blimps that record the eye movements of passersby and match them to advertising IDs harvested from their phones. «We are simply following the consumer outdoors,» said a Discover-Tech operations director. «If a person looks at an ad, that is a data point. If a person looks at an ad and then looks away, that is a richer data point.»

The company has already begun hiring skywriting pilots in nine countries and has contracted with municipal authorities in Belgium, which accounted for the majority of the firm's previously detected server traffic, to paint advertising slogans on public roads. Pedestrians who glance down at the pavement will be photographed by drones hovering at a fixed altitude, their faces matched against a database of «high-value attention profiles» compiled from the firm's earlier online campaign, which served roughly ten million ad impressions daily across nearly two hundred thousand websites.

Citizen Lab, which first documented the scheme, said the physical expansion represented «a predictable escalation» and noted that the firm's new billboards had been observed rotating slightly to follow the sun, «which is either a solar-tracking feature or a targeting feature, and we are not yet certain which.»
