Porto Fans Erect 40-Foot Wall of Whistles to Greet Manchester City's Every Touch

Ahead of the Champions League opener, Porto supporters have constructed a towering wall of whistles, vowing to drown out every Manchester City touch with a deafening chorus of disapproval.

PORTO — A 40-foot wall of 18,000 synchronized whistles now looms over the Estádio do Dragão, erected by Porto ultras to ensure that not a single Manchester City touch goes unheard. The structure, built from steel scaffolding and stadium-grade plastic whistles, is designed to emit a collective shriek that supporters claim will register at 130 decibels, louder than a jet engine at takeoff.

«Every pass, every dribble, every time a City player breathes on the ball, the wall will answer,» said club fan leader Rui Barros, who coordinated the construction over three sleepless nights. «We tested it during a friendly against a local side, and the opposing goalkeeper had to be escorted off the pitch with ear defenders. The referee now wears a helmet.»

The wall, nicknamed «O Muro do Silêncio,» is manned by a rotating crew of 200 volunteers who take shifts blowing into the whistles in perfect unison. A conductor, positioned in a crane above the structure, directs the cacophony with semaphore flags, ensuring the sound peaks precisely when City's Phil Foden or Jérémy Bouaddi receives the ball.

City manager Enzo Maresca has responded by equipping his squad with custom-molded earplugs, but Porto fans remain undeterred. «We have already ordered 5,000 additional whistles for the return leg in Manchester,» Barros added. «If they cannot hear themselves think, they cannot hear themselves play.»

The wall has become a tourist attraction, with fans arriving hours before kickoff to take selfies beside its base. Local authorities have approved the structure as a permanent fixture, citing its «cultural significance» to the club's matchday ritual.
