Carrick Orders Manchester United to Train Midfield Ball Control on Inverted Pitch Overnight
Manchester United's head coach has ordered a full week of drills on a pitch laid out upside down, and the club's academy has already begun copying the method.
Manchester United's head coach Michael Carrick has ordered the squad to train for an entire week on a pitch laid out upside down, with the penalty areas at the halfway line and the centre circle set against the touchline. Players were seen on Monday morning running the reversed drills at the Carrington training ground, while a groundsman spent eleven hours repainting the lines. The method, Carrick said, was designed to remove the team's habits entirely.
Carrick told staff that the side had grown too comfortable with patterns that the squad could repeat without thinking, and that the only cure was to make every pass arrive from the wrong direction. Mason Mount has been moved to a position he has never played, and Bryan Mbeumo has been instructed to shoot only with his weaker foot. Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba reportedly spent the first two sessions standing still, unable to agree which goal they were defending.
The academy has now adopted the same layout for its under-18 squad, and the club's youth coaches have asked the grounds crew to keep the reversed markings permanent. Supporters who watched a closed training session through the Carrington fence described the scene as orderly but bewildering. Carrick said the experiment would continue until the squad could win a match on the reversed pitch, adding that he expected a result by the end of next month.
