British Boarding Schools Now Require Students to Sign a 'Happiness Contract' Every Morning Before Breakfast

In a bold move to address the teen mental health crisis, UK boarding schools have introduced a mandatory morning ritual where students must publicly declare their emotional state and sign a binding pledge to be cheerful for the day.

Every boarding school in the United Kingdom will now require its students to sign a legally binding 'Happiness Contract' each morning before breakfast, under a sweeping new policy announced by the Department for Education. The contract, which runs to a single page, obliges the signatory to maintain a positive outlook for the entire day and to report any deviation to a designated member of staff within four minutes.

The policy was piloted at a prestigious A-level college in the Home Counties, where pupils now queue from 6:45 a.m. to collect their personal contract from a prefect known as the Warden of Cheer. Those who sign with a visibly trembling hand are escorted to a 'resilience pod' – a repurposed telephone box – where they must listen to recordings of the headmaster reading the school's mission statement until their signature steadies.

«We have found that the simple act of signing a promise to be happy is more effective than any counselling session,» said Dr. Eleanor Vance, the department's newly appointed Director of Mandatory Optimism. «Last term, one pupil reported feeling sad at 9:12 a.m. and was required to re-sign her contract eleven times before lunch. She has not reported sadness since.»

Schools have begun competing to produce the longest unbroken chain of signed contracts, with one academy in Yorkshire displaying its daily tally on a scoreboard visible from the M62. Pupils who fail to sign are assigned to a 'Gratitude Patrol', walking the grounds at dawn to identify things that are not, in fact, problems. The first national Happiness Contract Compliance Report is due next month, and ministers have already promised to extend the scheme to universities, where students will be required to sign before every lecture.
