Kyiv Scientists Replace Entire Mouse Brain With Human Tissue, Mouse Now Files for Overtime

A Kyiv neuroscience institute has grown human brain organoids to fill the skulls of laboratory mice, and the mice have begun demanding employment contracts and better cheese.

KYIV — In a procedure that took eleven hours per animal, researchers at the Kyiv Institute of Neural Reconstruction have removed the brains of laboratory mice and replaced them with human brain organoids grown from donated tissue, leaving the animals with skulls full of human neurons and no discernible interest in running mazes.

The institute's director, Dr. Olena Marchenko, confirmed that the first cohort of mice has begun exhibiting what she called «unexpectedly bureaucratic behavior», including lining up at the cage door each morning and waiting to be assigned tasks. «We expected them to solve puzzles,» Marchenko said. «Instead they formed a committee and requested written job descriptions.»

By the third week, the mice had organized a rotating shift schedule, elected a spokesmouse, and submitted a formal demand for improved bedding and a pension plan. When researchers attempted to return them to standard maze trials, the mice refused to enter until the maze was widened to accommodate what they described as «reasonable accessibility standards».

The institute has since expanded the program to four hundred mice, each implanted with organoids derived from a single donor to ensure «consistent workplace culture», according to a statement. A new wing is under construction to house the animals in individual offices, and the ministry has approved a budget line for tiny ergonomic chairs.

Marchenko remains optimistic. «We set out to study human brain disease,» she said. «We have instead created a workforce. The mice are now demanding annual leave, and frankly, they have earned it.»
