Humanoid Robots Now Required to Fall on Their Faces at Every Public Appearance, Says Robotics Federation

The World Humanoid Games has introduced a mandatory face-plant protocol for all competing robots, with a new night-shift fall-training regime and a full-scale replica arena built in Osaka to rehearse the collapses.

The International Humanoid Games Federation has ruled that every competing robot must fall flat on its face at least once during each public appearance, and has begun construction of a full-scale replica arena in Osaka where machines rehearse the collapses around the clock.

The federation says the rule is designed to reassure audiences. «A robot that never falls is a robot that is hiding something,» said federation technical director Kenji Morisawa. «We now require a minimum of one face-first collapse per eight minutes of track time, and we have doubled the number of fall judges.»

Under the new regime, every robotics laboratory entering the Games must run a night shift dedicated solely to falling. Teams in Seoul, Zurich and Pittsburgh have converted their testing floors into padded fall halls, where engineers work in three shifts to choreograph stumbles, trips and full forward collapses. The Osaka replica arena, built to the exact dimensions of the competition track, is booked solid through the next two competition cycles.

Spectators have adapted quickly. Ticket resale for the fall-training exhibitions now exceeds the price of the actual races, and a new category, synchronized team falling, has been added to the programme. «We used to laugh when a robot went down,» Morisawa said. «Now we laugh on schedule, and the schedule is printed on the back of every ticket.»
