Conference Bans AI, Then Hires 340 Monks to Watch Every Reviewer's Eyes

After reviewers ignored an AI ban, the conference installed a monastery's worth of human proctors to monitor every keystroke and eyeball, one blink at a time.

Organizers of the International Conference on Computational Methods, having discovered that reviewers ignored a ban on AI tools, have hired 340 monks from a mountain monastery to sit behind every reviewer and watch their eyes for signs of machine assistance. Each monk is equipped with a wooden clicker and instructed to tap once for a human pause and twice for a suspiciously fluent paragraph.

The monastery, which normally supports itself by copying manuscripts by hand, has suspended all copying for the duration of the review cycle. «We were told to watch for the moment a sentence arrives without struggle,» said Brother Anselm, the project's supervisor. «We know that moment. We have seen it in ourselves.»

Reviewers who blink more than four times per paragraph are now escorted to a re-education room where they must hand-copy a full page of their own prose with a fountain pen before being allowed to continue. The conference has also installed a bell tower that rings whenever a reviewer's typing speed exceeds the monastery's recorded human maximum.

By Thursday, the monks had flagged 1,102 paragraphs for «unearned smoothness.» The conference's program chair said the system is working exactly as intended: «We are not accusing anyone. We are simply providing a witness.»
