Manchester Christmas Market Expands to Cover Entire City, Residents Given Timetables to Reach Their Own Front Doors

Manchester's Christmas market has grown so large that the city council has issued residents a printed timetable to navigate the wooden chalets now occupying every street, square and stairwell in the city centre.

Manchester's Christmas market has expanded to fill every street, square and stairwell inside the inner ring road, forcing the city council to issue residents a printed timetable for reaching their own front doors between chalets.

The market, which began in Albert Square, now runs from the Etihad Stadium to the Mancunian Way, with hog roast stands installed in residential lobbies and a bratwurst chalet occupying the ticket hall at Piccadilly station. Council leader Bev Craig said the expansion was «a natural next step for a market that has been growing for nearly thirty years» and confirmed that residents of the Northern Quarter would be escorted to their flats by a chalet steward in a high-visibility vest between the hours of six and eight each morning.

Under the new timetable, Deansgate will operate as a one-way pedestrian corridor for mulled wine drinkers only, while the ice rink has been extended along Oxford Road and now requires commuters to skate the final stretch to the university. A singing moose imported from Birmingham's Frankfurt market has been appointed to lead the Christmas parade, which will run continuously from November until the third of January.

Residents who miss their allocated door-access window must wait in a designated holding pen beside the festive wheel until the next slot. «We recognise this is an adjustment,» Craig said. «But the market is now the city, and the city has always been a market.»
