Fed Hikes Rates So Hard Gold Flees Country, Oil Follows on Foot

In an unprecedented escalation of monetary policy, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates to a level that caused gold to physically evacuate the United States, with crude oil following on foot. The move, intended to cool inflation, has instead triggered a mass migration of commodities across the southern border.

2021–2023 inflation surge

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Thursday to a level so high that gold, in a single coordinated movement, abandoned its vaults in New York and London and began marching south toward the Mexican border, according to officials at the Commodity Relocation Task Force.

The rate hike, described by Fed Chair Jerome Powell as «a modest adjustment to reflect persistent inflationary pressures,» has pushed the effective federal funds rate to a point where holding a non-yielding asset is not merely unattractive but physically unbearable. Gold, which had been stored in the form of standard 400-troy-ounce bars, was observed forming orderly columns and departing through the service entrances of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern Time.

By evening, crude oil had joined the exodus, with tanker trucks seen idling along Interstate 35, their drivers reporting that the commodity had requested to be taken «somewhere with a more reasonable discount rate.» The White House declined to comment, though a spokesperson confirmed that the administration is «monitoring the situation and remains confident in the strength of the dollar, which is staying put.»

Economists warned that the migration could accelerate if the Fed signals further hikes, and that other commodities, including silver and copper, are «packing their things.» A hastily assembled border reception center in Laredo, Texas, has reportedly begun processing gold bars under a humanitarian parole program, while oil is being asked to wait in a separate line.
